The Ukrainian banking system has undergone unprecedented changes in the last few years: the number of institutions has halved, a challenging reform process has made impressive progress and the clean-up, which included the nationalisation of the country’s largest lender, PrivatBank, has left the state with a major stake in the sector, which it is committed to decreasing through a series of part-privatisations and acquisitions of stakes by international partners.
Much effort is being made to restore confidence in the financial sector and to encourage banks to increase lending to the real economy. Many challenges and issues for debate remain, not least: Creditor rights protection, how to resolve NPLs, the adequacy of capitalisation requirements and further consolidation and M&A activity in the sector.
All of these crucial issues and many more will be discussed at the Ukrainian Banking Day in London this June.
The inaugural Ukrainian Banking Day in London took place in December 2017. The Day was officially supported by the Embassy of Ukraine in the UK and the Independent Association of Banks of Ukraine and was sponsored by White & Case, DLA Piper and Evris Law Firm. Over 120 senior bankers from across Europe and the US participated, including the Chairmen and Board Members of 15 leading Ukrainian banks.
